Low Bentham Village Play Area, Lancaster
HAGS were contacted and asked to look at producing a design proposal for the scheme along with other industry suppliers. The project came about after the sale of Town Council land to developers, which allowed them to finance the scheme. The site was a former Village School playing field which is Council owned land.
Process included an initial design concept proposal, including a display and consultation in the Village Primary School which led to a refined tender brief and formal tender. The council wanted to develop a full ‘Community’ facility which tailored for all ages from toddlers to teenagers, and which offered both a Play and Sport provision. They also wanted to include an ongoing programme of Operational Maintenance. which was built into the tender offer.
The site is on a large slope, which was difficult given the desire to build a MUGA. As such a full laser level survey had to be undertaken to accurately cost the job, and subsequently, significant groundworks had to be undertaken in order to accommodate new baseworks and ultimately the design.
The finished design included an ARENA Duo MUGA system, a designated fenced toddler play area with a full wetpour surface throughout. The area for juniors and teenagers was included lower down the site and included dynamic equipment such as the Titan, Basket Swing and Nexus Core systems.
The site provides a play area in Low Bentham where previously there wasn’t one, and in order for children to get to a playground previously they had to travel to High Bentham which wasn’t possible either on their own or without a car. As such the project has provided a welcome neighbourhood play and sport facility for the children and community of Low Bentham.
