Rowanfield Infant School, Cheltenham
Outdoor learning turns it around for Rowanfield
Rowanfield Infant School in Cheltenham appointed HAGS to revive their dilapidated play area, offering limited play value. The existing play area was significantly underused as the original trim trail surfacing was extremely muddy during winter months.
The school was awarded funds to support important infrastructure projects, following an unsatisfactory Ofsted result. Head Teacher, Aysha Akif, called on the expertise of HAGS Schools to provide a play area fit for purpose. With an open brief, Area Sales manager, Michael Carter proposed improving the schools outside learning provision.
The complete redesign incorporates artificial grass surfacing allowing the play area to be used all year round and includes three main zones. The active zone includes a number of physical activities, pupils can tackle the clamber stack, explore the wigwam or ride the slides, encouraging pupils to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. The adventure zone provides a number of role play options, aspiring narrators can address an audience comfortably from the storytelling area or pupils can try out their acting skills on the impressive stage. The fun zone is split into four sensory play options including sand and water play, while the zoned wetpour incorporates the schools four house colours into the design.
Head Teacher, Aysha Akif, said “The new trim trail is a huge success! It is a sparkling addition to our school, enabling our little gems to shine”. Following the schools recent Ofsted success, it is clear that Rowanfield’s strong emphasis on outdoor learning has supported pupil’s engagement in their learning.
Aysha tells us “The children enjoy listening to stories and then retelling them and acting them out in the carefully designed story making zones within the playground, it is a wonderful literacy resource to have in an infant school.”
Conor from Year 1 describes the playground as “5 star!” He tell us he loves it! He enjoys the water feature and the wooden frame is fantastic as he loves to climb.
