What is FSC?
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. It is an international non-profit organization that promotes responsible management of the world's forests. The FSC was established in 1993 with the goal of setting standards for sustainable forest management and certifying forest products that meet these standards.
The FSC operates through a certification system that verifies forests and companies against a set of rigorous environmental, social, and economic criteria. Forests that are certified by the FSC are managed in a way that ensures the protection of biodiversity, respect for indigenous peoples' rights, and the maintenance of ecosystem services. Certified companies can use the FSC logo on their products to inform consumers that the wood or paper comes from responsibly managed sources.
The FSC has become a widely recognized and trusted certification system for forest products globally. Its certification helps consumers make informed choices by supporting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. By promoting responsible forestry, the FSC aims to protect forests for future generations and contribute to the well-being of communities and the planet.
What is PEFC?
PEFC stands for Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification. Similar to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), PEFC is an international non-profit organization that promotes sustainable forest management and certifies forest products.
PEFC was established in 1999 as an alternative certification system to FSC. It provides a framework for the certification of forests and the tracking of wood and paper products throughout the supply chain. The organization operates through a set of internationally recognized standards and guidelines, which are developed through a multi-stakeholder process involving governments, NGOs, forest owners, and industry representatives.
PEFC's main objective is to ensure that forests are managed in an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable manner. Its certification system focuses on key aspects such as biodiversity conservation, respect for indigenous peoples' rights, the use of appropriate chemicals, and compliance with national and international laws.
One of the distinct features of PEFC is its emphasis on national-level forest certification systems. While FSC is a global organization with its own standards, PEFC recognizes and endorses national forest certification systems that meet its requirements. This approach allows for local adaptation and implementation of certification processes while maintaining compliance with international principles.
PEFC-certified products can carry the PEFC logo, indicating that they come from sustainably managed forests. The PEFC certification is particularly prevalent in regions where national certification systems aligned with PEFC standards are prominent, such as Europe, North America, and Asia.
It's worth noting that both FSC and PEFC are recognized globally and aim to promote sustainable forestry practices.
